This recognition celebrates the high-quality lifelong learning initiatives already happening in the city. It also highlights Waterford’s strong potential to keep developing new ways to work together and support lifelong learning for all ages.
Our goal is to create a lasting culture of lifelong learning for the people of Waterford. Let’s make it happen. Will you join us?
Our designation as a UNESCO Learning City is a result of the collaborative work of Waterford City and County Council, Southeast Technological University (SETU) Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board (WWETB) Waterford Area Partnership, Kilkenny County Council, Waterford Chamber of Commerce, and The Southern Regional Assembly.
Together, they now form the Waterford Learning City Working Group and have built a strong foundation of commitment and support to advance Waterford as a Learning City.
A Learning City helps build a continued culture of lifelong learning through:
From early years to higher education, learning is for everyone.
Supporting learning within families, neighbourhoods, and local spaces.
Supporting skills growth and career pathways
improving the impact of education
Using technology to expand access
In mobilizing resources to support different pathways to lifelong learning, a Learning City helps contribute to a more inclusive, thriving society.
As learners, the city champions lifelong education and inclusive opportunities for all ages. As makers, Waterford honours its rich heritage of craftsmanship and creativity, from the iconic Waterford Crystal to its thriving creative and manufacturing sectors. As innovators, the city is a growing hub for new ideas, technology, and collaboration.
Our city theme reflects our identity and strengths, as well as future ambitions.
