Our Overview

Waterford UNESCO Learning City is a proud member of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities — a worldwide initiative that promotes lifelong learning for all.
Our mission is to make learning accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable for everyone in Waterford, regardless of age or background.
Through collaboration between South East Technological University (SETU), Waterford City & County Council, WWETB, and community partners, we aim to create opportunities that inspire curiosity, strengthen community connections, and support personal and professional growth across the region.
How it Started
Our designation as a UNESCO Learning City is a result of the collaborative work of Waterford City and County Council, Southeast Technological University (SETU) Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board (WWETB) , Buíon Phort Láirge, Kilkenny County Council, Waterford Chamber of Commerce, and The Southern Regional Assembly. Together, they now form the Waterford Learning City Working Group and have built a strong foundation of commitment and support to advance Waterford as a Learning City.
Learning City Theme: Learners, Makers, Innovators
Our Learning City theme is: “Learners, Makers, Innovators”. As learners, the city champions lifelong education and inclusive opportunities for all ages. As makers, Waterford honours its rich heritage of craftsmanship and creativity, from the iconic Waterford Crystal to its thriving creative and manufacturing sectors. As innovators, the city is a growing hub for new ideas, technology, and collaboration. Our city theme reflects our identity and strengths, as well as future ambitions.
